Campfire Fun

I am so proud of the children from Room 10.
Last week after the big storm we began talking about how much fun it is to go camping and how we are all looking forward to summer.

The children genuinely led a BRILLIANT example of inquiry learning.  I was as excited as the children were - especially as I saw their ideas grow and get bigger and bigger the more they talked and the more they thought.

The children proposed having a campfire sing along.

Together we wrote a plan.
The children decided they wanted a campfire with a tent, milo, marshmallows and singing.  They wanted to make campfire ring with stones and to sit with blankets just like on a real camping adventure.

The children shared their ideas with each other and with  me.  Together we wrote a letter to Rooms 5 and 8 to invite them to our campfire too.

I agreed to bring along a tent, marshmallows, milo, blankets and a few rocks.

The children rang Mrs Tasker and asked her to play the guitar for the sing-along - and she agreed.

We were VERY excited all week and when Friday morning finally arrived the children arrived with huge smiles, blankets and a great deal of anticipation.

When it came time for Discovery we also invited Rooms 4 and 9 to join us.

The weather was fantastic - although rather windy!

The children laid the campfire out, the set themselves up with blankets and in the tents.  It was so much fun to watch them cooperate and feel excited.  Some children even brought along ukuleles to join in with the singing!

We decided to have juice rather than milo as it was soooo hot.  Rachel had brought some famous American Juice sachets so we made those up - the colours were so bright and the flavours were delicious and different to our regular New Zealand juices....this tied in nicely with our Knowing Me, Knowing You topic.

When we were all set up Mrs Tasker played the guitar and we all sang along to our favourite campfire songs like Twinkle, Twinkle.

I gave the children drinks of juice and marshmallows - I know now that one of my highlights of this year will be watching the children toasting their marshmallows as if over a real campfire.  I loved listening to the chatter amongst the children and hearing them share their own camping tales...and there was a wee group of children in the bigger tent telling camp stories too!

Well done to all of the children for huge amount of thought, planning and preparation that went into this really neat activity and a huge well done for the great way you showed the St Albans Values during the campfire.

I loved  watching you in action!
