Food from Israel

Today Rachel brought us some special treats that come from Israel.  We talked about a special celebration in her family and why she enjoys the food so much.

We at some yummy marshmallow with strawberry in the centre and some peanut chips that we thought tasted like peanut butter.

Thank you for sharing your culture with us Rachel.

Powhiri at St Albans School

Today we had a powhiri to welcome the visitors from ERO to our school.

We went outside just after 9am today.

We sat on the court and we listened to some very clever children from Room 2 and 3 welcome our visitors to our school in Maori.  They spoke very clearly.  We felt proud of them.

Then we all did the Haka.  We like doing the Haka and we are very good at it.

Next some people spoke in Maori to welcome our guests and we sang a song and so did our visitors.

Mrs Warren spoke to us all too then we came back to our class.

We wrote amazing stories about the powhiri in our writing books.  We would love you to pop in and read them some time.

Great reading Josh

Today we celebrated 100 reading nights with Josh.  Josh, you have worked so hard to become so good at reading.  You are super confident, fluent and I love listening to you read.

Reflection time

As the year is nearing an end we have been doing some reflecting on our learning journey so far.

We have written stories about what we have learned since we began school.  We realised just how much we have learned- and it is A LOT!

We are making a special keepsake book to take home at the end of the year that will help us to remember what we have done at school since we began this year.  We looked at our birthday photo taken on our first day of school.  We all look so much older and wiser already!

We made a movie about some of our favourite things about school  Have a look at it here.
We have become really good at making imovies now and we can even make them without any help from Mrs Pelham.  Rory and Ava are particularly great at helping us.

Those families with ipads....imovie is a FANTASTIC app you might like to add......also please remember to add your favourite apps to our class google doc.

Our Learning

We made a movie today about all the neat things we are learning in our class.  Have a look at us here.

Rachel's Reading Celebration

Congratulations to Rachel who has been reading for 100 nights.  That is a huge achievement Rachel....and a lot of books!  I love that you read so fluently and confidently.  Keep up the great work.

Discovery Time Discoveries

Today during Discovery Time we did some awesome Discovering!

Some children made some really cool pet rocks out of some big river stones.  They painted the rocks and later added glitter, and eyes.  The childre had heaps of fun making up wee shows using their rocks as the characters.  It was great to see.  I loved the descriptive language they were using as they played. Kai Pai Room 10 and 8.

The children also discovered if they put the magnetic sticks onto the posts outside they made awesome paths to the bottom.  It was interesting to watch what was happening.  We had a lot of fun watching and we had some great ideas about why they made the paths that they did....then we became real discoverers and used google to discover why the magnetic sticks moved like they did.
We discovered it was because gravity (the force that pulls us to the Earth) was stronger than the magnetic force.  The reason the magnetic sticks went in a pattern was probably because of the bumpy surface on the poles we think- that was Rory's great idea.

art adventures

Today we learned about the artist Jackson Pollock.
We learned that Jackson Pollock was famous for art works that look like lots of blobs of paint!

Jackson Pollock was friends with Picasso and Miro who are other famous artists we learned about.

We discovered this fantastic web site that allows us to make digital versions of Jackson Pollock's art work.  You could have a go - we would love to see your art work!

This is an example of Jackson Pollock's art work.  This is called Number 8.

We had a turn at making our own Jackson Pollock artwork using paint that was watered down.  We got to splash and flick the pait to make our art work look like Jackson Pollock's.  We had so much fun and we are proud of our art work.  What do you think?

I loved the way you all had big smiles on your faces and that your tried your very best.

We began the day setting ourselves some goals.....and at the end of the day the children who were still at school did some reflecting on how they went today.  Have a look at the imovie we made using the ipad to record our ideas.

During the day Pauline and Melissa (Josh and Rachel's Mums) took some photos of all the chidlren at different events.  Have a look at the great photos in this movie.

Lily's Special Day

Today we sang our Wiggly Tooth song as Lily has lost her second tooth.  We had great fun.  Lily looks so grown up with a big gap where her tooth was!
I have enjoyed watching the rest of the children wiggle their teeth all day!

Have a look at this big smile!

To make a great day even better for Lily she also had her lovely little sister Maya join us on the mat for the morning.  Lily was a very proud big sister and she took great care of her sister.

Lily, I'm so proud of you and I love teaching you.  Thanks for being so wonderful.

Solar Eclipse Day

Today is a special day because there is a Solar Eclipse.

This means that the moon goes in front of the sun.

It makes it darker for us.

We have learned about Solar Eclipses and we have watched some You Tube clips to help us understand what is happening.

We are watching the sun and the moon today to see the solar eclipse happening....but we know that we CAN'T look straight at the sun.

We are making an imovie about the Solar Eclipse....we will post it here when we have finished it.

We are going to write about the solar eclipse too.

We went to Room 8 and taught the children about the solar eclipse and we taught Nina (Ava's Mum) too.

We are great teachers!

We turned out written reports into a news bulletin and we recorded each other on the ipad.  We added this to our imovie.

We also made pin hole cameras so we could see the solar eclipse, it was fun to make these and very easy too.

Eclipse

There is a fantastic movie clip on this web site that shows what the solar eclipse looked like.

Quality Writing- Rachel and Charlotte D

Today we wrote great stories about the school fair.

Charlotte took her story to Mrs Warren and got her first ever Principals Award.  Charlotte wrote a great story about the things she could see, hear, smell, taste and feel at the fair.  She wrote quickly and independently and had great ideas and excellent interest words.  WELL DONE Charlotte.

Rachel wrote an amazing story today too.  She took her writing to Room 8.  Mrs Norton was very impressed with how well Rachel can write and at her fantastic ideas.  Rachel, you wrote completely by yourself today and you had brilliant ideas.  Well done.

We had a great time....and making candy floss turned out to be a really fun way to spend the day!  Thanks to all the great parents and children who helped out!

Thanks and congratulations to Ava and Josh who did an outstanding job of selling our lolly sushi....they were excellent salespeople and encouraged people to buy and enjoy our delicious baking....I was impressed with the way they asked people to buy and also the way they managed the money.
